Background of the Study
Political socialization refers to the process through which individuals acquire political values, beliefs, and behaviors, which shape their political participation and identity (Jibril & Aminu, 2023). Family structures play a pivotal role in this process, particularly in Nigeria, where familial influence often extends beyond the domestic sphere into political ideologies and practices (Kassim & Umar, 2024). In Gwarzo LGA, Kano State, the family has been a significant source of political socialization, transmitting political values across generations. These intergenerational political values, shaped by family dynamics, have implications for the political culture of the area, influencing voting behavior, civic participation, and political loyalty (Musa & Sani, 2023). This study examines the role of family structures in the political socialization process in Gwarzo LGA, specifically focusing on how intergenerational transmission of political values influences the political attitudes and behavior of young people in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the acknowledged role of families in political socialization, the specific impact of family structures on intergenerational political values in Gwarzo LGA remains under-explored. Families in the region are often seen as important agents of political education, yet the effects of varying family dynamics—such as nuclear versus extended family structures—on political attitudes have not been fully documented (Mohammed & Bakare, 2024). This study aims to address this gap by exploring how family systems in Gwarzo LGA influence the political socialization process, especially in terms of the values passed from one generation to the next and their effect on local political engagement.

The findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and community leaders in developing strategies to engage youth politically, considering the critical influence of family in political education. This research also highlights the potential of family-based approaches in enhancing political participation at the grassroots level.
